In 2019, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reported confirmed cases of diphtheria. In 2020, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela have reported confirmed cases of diphtheria. The following is the epidemiological situation for diphtheria for countries where new confirmed cases or an update has been reported since the prior PAHO/WHO Epidemiological Update on Diphtheria published on 18 June 2020. In Brazil, between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 30 of 2020, 12 suspected cases of diphtheria were reported, of which 2 were confirmed and 2 remain under investigation. The first confirmed case is a 25-year-old female resident of Timóteo Municipality, Minas Gerais State. The second confirmed case is a 32-year-old female resident of Uruguaiana Municipality, Rio Grande do Sul State. Both cases were confirmed by clinical-epidemiological criteria. [...]

En 2020, Brasil, Haití, República Dominicana y la República Bolivariana de Venezuela han notificados casos confirmados de difteria. A continuación, se presenta la situación epidemiológica de difteria en países que han actualizado los casos confirmados desde la Actualización Epidemiológica de difteria publicada el 18 de junio de 2020.     In 2019, Colombia, Haiti, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela have reported confirmed cases. In 2018, the same three countries reported confirmed cases. The following is a summary of the epidemiological situation reported by Colombia, Haiti, and Venezuela. In Colombia, one confirmed case of diphtheria has been reported in 2019. The case is a 4-year-old Venezuelan national and resident of Cúcuta Municipality in Norte de Santander Department, with an unverifiable vaccination history. The case had onset of symptoms on 12 October 2019; the case was confirmed by clinical-epidemiological and laboratory criteria (a sample of pharyngeal pseudomembrane tested positive for Corynebacterium diphtheriae and the diphtheria toxin gene by real-time PCR). No secondary cases related to this case were reported. In Haiti, between epidemiological week (EW) 32 of 2014 and EW 46 of 2019, there were 951 probable cases reported, including 119 deaths; of the total cases, 287 were confirmed (278 laboratory-confirmed and 9 by epidemiological link.

    In 2021, between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 7, two countries have reported confirmed cases of diphtheria: the Dominican Republic with 5 fatal cases and Haiti with 6 cases, including 1 death. In 2020, a total of 5 countries reported a total of 80 confirmed cases of diphtheria, including 21 deaths in the Region of the Americas: Brazil (2 cases), the Dominican Republic (3 cases, including 2 deaths), Haiti (66 cases, including 16 deaths), Peru (4 cases, including one death) and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (5 cases, including 2 deaths).

    From epidemiological week (EW) 1 to EW 32 of 2017, three countries in the Americas reported suspected and confirmed diphtheria cases: Brazil (1 case), Haiti (80 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (123 cases). In 2016, three countries in the Americas reported 78 confirmed diphtheria cases: the Dominican Republic (2 cases), Haiti (56 cases), and Venezuela (20 cases).
