Description
In Mexico, social service is defined as temporary work rendered by medical students who have completed their medical studies (pasantes) and similar students in other fields of learning, for the benefit of the public and of the State
This type of service was instituted in 1936 for medical students as a result of an agreement between the Medical School of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the Department of Public Health and Social Welfare, and the rural communities covered by the plan
By this plan the School of Medicine rounded out the studies of a medical student and repaid society for part of the investment it had made in the training of the future physician; the Department of Public Health and Social Welfare provided communities with good quality preventive and curative services; and the desire and right of many rural communities to receive the benefits of modern medical science was satisfied
The objectives which were established for this type of social service and which continue to be in force are these: to round out academic studies, to provide last-year medical students with an objective knowledge of the health problems of the ocuntry and the procedures which the Department of Health uses to solve them; to promote the development of rural communities through the application of health programs; and to achieve a better distribution of physicians in the country

Item Integración de la medicina preventiva y social en las distintas escuelas de una universidad(s.d.)Modern medicine has various characteristics, especially the integration of its various social functions, and is based on the work of a team composed of physicians and other professional health workers. All professional health workers should have a satisfactory academic training, not only to enable them to apply their specific techniques but also to understand their countries' health problems as a whole. A basic curriculum which might be used in the various departments of preventive medicine might cover: a) epidemiology and control of acute infectious and chronic diseases; b) elements of psychology, medical sociology, and health education; c) social and preventive aspects peculiar to each profession; d) organization of community health services and the resources available to them; e) basic principles of administration. The participation of students from various professions in field work under suitable supervision might strengthen this curriculum. To make this type of training a reality the following mechanisms might be used: a) each school should have its own teaching staff; b) a department of preventive medicine or a school of public health should assume responsibility for the teaching of preventive medicine in all schools; and c) a coordinating committee should examine teaching methods in each school and offer suggestions for making them more efficient, for achieving coordination and whereItem La sanidad en Venezuela(s.d.)As a first step towards making a career of sanitary work, the Health Department of Venezuela has been stressing proper training of health workers. During 1944, the first course at the Malariology School and the second course for sanitarians were successfully carried out with physicians and engineers from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Venezuela participating. Monthly courses of one week duration were also given for rural physicians, the subject in 1944 being Chagas' disease. Several graduates of the National School for Nurses were sent abroad for additional training and special training was also given to auxiliary personnel in venereal disease control, laboratory and milk sanitation. T raining of inspectors for hookworm work was started and two rural medical posts were raised to health units. Mother and child welfare services took great steps forward and 18,849 expectant mothers and 30,3501 children were supervised, about 550,000 liters of fresh milk and 25,500 cans of powdered milk distributed. The number of hospital beds for mothers was increased to 1,263. Infant mortality rate for 1944 was 40.7 as compared to 137.9 for 1941 in Caracas. There are at present 12 dining rooms for school children which are supervised by the health department. The number of physicians practicing in rural districts is at present 184, 75 per cent of which are with the public health service. In 1940 the National Nutrition Department was established, and the Labor and Indian Affairs Department were transferred to the Ministry of Justice. During the ten years of its existence, the Ministry of Health has made great strides forward in spite of insufficient funds. The budget for 1944 was considerably greater than for previous years, 15 million soles (about $2,307,700.00) as compared to 5 million soles (about $769,200) in 1939. The actual amount was much larger in 1944, as special funds, welfare appropriation, etc., raised it to about 50 millions soles (about $7,692,000)Item Planes futuros de la Secretaría de Salubridad y Asistencia para los Estados de la Frontera Norte de México(s.d.)The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare of Mexico has been carrying out programs aimed at maintaining the eradication of smallpox and yellow fever and controlling and, finally, eradicating diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, rabies and rheumatic feverItem Encuestas sobre accidentes en el hogar en ciudades de la Frontera Norte de México(s.d.)As an introduction, the author reports that accidents occupy fifth place among the causes of death in Mexico.
