Description
This paper contains a description of a simplified procedure for dental examinations to measure the prevalence of caries in school populations based on the information furnished by the first molar of the permanent teeth and the second molar of the deciduous teeth
The results of examinations made with this procedure in three typical regions of Argentina appear in the tables and graphs in the text
Information gained by means of this simplified examination may be useful for a speedy and extensive assessment of the prevalence of caries in the school population
The examination is conducted in the classroom and the children need not leave their desks. The margin of error in this purely visual test, in which incipient caries may be overlooked, has been estimated at 18 per cent of the caries found by using mirror and probe
In other respects, this examination is no different from the usual DMF examination
It requires a minimum of staff as each team is composed of only one dentist and one auxiliary
A properly trained team can easily examine three hundred pupils per hour without disturbing school work(AU)

Las enfermedades dentales en la América Latina
    (s.d.) Russell, A. L
The basic general problem can be reduced to simple terms: dental caries is quite as prevalent in the young and growing population of Latin America as it is in people of the United States. The need thus created is not being met, and cannot be met fully by treatment, because there are too few dentists in most areas. When and if dental caries is broght under a measure of control our experience in the United States is apt to be repeated - that periodontal disease must be managed as well as dental caries if the typical adult is to retain a functional natural dentition through his middle and later years

    La sanidad en Bolivia
    (s.d.) Navarro, Hubert E
Work on health problems is progressing in Bolivia, under the New Department of Health, of the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Welfare. Such subjects as malaria, tuberculosis, venereal disease, leprosy, typhus, intestinal parasites, smallpox, typhoid fever, yellow fever, bubonic plague, are being paid special attention. An extensive study of native food products is being made in order to establish a better diet for the people in general. Considerable thought is being given to the health of school children and school physicians have done their part in examining them for chronic diseases and also for incipient troubles which may be corrected at early stages. Plans are being made to create special schools for retarded, deaf and dumb, and blind children. A total of 28 per cent of the children examined were found to have dental caries. Children needing corective glasses were furnished them. Inspection of the manufacture and sale of drugs has continued. Regulations concerning narcotics were rigidly enforced. From August 1944 to August 1945 the National Bacteriological Institute prepared a total of 883,798 doses of various products. New constructions include: in La Paz Department, Broncho-pulmonary Hospital and operating pavilion at the Miraflores General Hospital in La Paz, costing about $120,000; Public Welfare Building, costing about $20,000; and enlarging the Miraflores General Hospital ...(AU)

Tres proyectos simplificados de atencion primaria de salud y su efecto sobre la nutricion y la salud infantiles
(s.d.) Delgado, Hernán L; Valverde, Victor; Hurtado, Elena
This article considers the effects on child nutrition and health achieved by three simplified primary health care projects developed by the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama in rural areas of Guatemala from 1969 to 1981. The first of this projects encompassed four non-indian communities of El Progreso department and the other two, several Indian communities in the departments of Solola and Suchitepequez. In all of them, curative and preventive services were provided by primary health care workers supervised by a physician that made periodic visits to the community health care centers. These workers included nursing and perinatal auxiliaries, health promoters, and traditional birth attendants trained in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of patients. In addition, a program was carried out for the vaccination of expectant mothers with tetanus toxoid. A substantial reduction of infant mortality was observed in the course of the three projects. The reduction was most pronounced in El Progreso, where children and expectant mothers received food supplements. There was also a marked improvement in the nutritional status and growth of the children. In view of the current worsening of the economic problems of the Latin American countries and the impracticability of allocating more funds to health care, the authors suggest extending health services by means of simplified primary
