Description

Item Prevalence of persistent symptoms after having COVID-19 in a cohort in Suriname(2023)[ABSTRACT]. Objectives. To determine the prevalence of persistent symptoms after having coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a cohort in Suriname, and assess the factors associated with long COVID. Methods. A sample of adults 18 years and older who were registered 3–4 months previously in a national database because of a positive COVID-19 test were selected. They were interviewed about socioeconomic characteristics, pre-COVID-19 health status and lifestyle, and symptoms during and after COVID-19. A subset of participants underwent a physical examination to determine body mass index, waist circumference, cardiovascular parameters, lung function, and functionality. Results. A total of 106 participants (mean age 49 (standard deviation 15) years; 62.3% female) were inter- viewed, of whom 32 were physically examined. The greatest proportion of participants was of Hindustani descent (22.6%). Overall, 37.7% of participants were physically inactive, 26.4% had hypertension or diabe- tes mellitus, and 13.2% had been previously diagnosed with heart disease. Most participants (56.6%) had experienced mild COVID-19 and 14.2% had experienced severe COVID-19. A large proportion (39.6%) had experienced at least one persistent symptom after recovery from acute COVID-19 and more women were affected (47.0% of women versus 27.5% of men). Fatigue and alopecia were the most common symptoms, followed by dyspnea and sleep disturbance. Differences were observed between ethnic groups. Based on physical examination, 45.0% of the subset was obese and 67.7% had very high waist-circumference. Conclusions. About 40% of the cohort had at least one persistent symptom 3–4 months after having had COVID-19, with differences observed by sex and ethnic group.Item Bullying involvement and substance use among Brazilian adolescent students(2018)[ABSTRACT]. Objective. Although bullying involvement has been associated with adolescent substance use, most of this evidence comes from high-income countries. Little is known about substance use among perpetrator-victims in low- and middle-income countries. This study explores the asso-ciation between types of bullying involvement and adolescent substance use in Brazil. Methods. Data for this cross-sectional study came from the 2015 Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar [National Adolescent School-based Health Survey] (PeNSE), a nationwide school-based survey of Brazilian ninth graders. Substance use was analyzed as any substance use (i.e., use of alcohol, cigarettes, or marijuana in the previous 30 days) and substance co-use (i.e., use of all three substances). Logistic regression analyses were conducted, and adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were calculated, adjusting for demographic characteristics and student loneliness. Results. Odds of any substance use for bullying perpetrators-only and for perpetrator-victims, respectively, were significantly higher compared to no bullying involvement (aOR = 2.99, 95% CI = 2.71-3.30 and aOR = 2.52, 95% CI = 2.31-2.75). Adjusted odds of substance co-use were also significantly higher among perpetrators-only and perpetrator-victims (aOR = 4.04, 95% CI = 3.05-5.35 and aOR = 3.49, 95% CI = 2.71-4.51, respectively). Victimizationonly was associated with a 14% increase in the odds of any substance use (aOR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.07-1.22). Conclusions. The results underscore the complex relationship between adolescent bullying involvement and substance use. Findings also indicate the type of bullying involvement, as well as demographic and psychological factors, should be taken into consideration when assessing adolescent health-risk behaviors. Hypertension (arterial blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, with the greatest burden of attributable deaths in Chile, having a national prevalence of 27.6%. In 2018, the implemen- tation of HEARTS begun in primary health care centers of the Public Health System, with the aim of achieving increase in control rates, by raising the proportion of hypertensive individuals who meet blood pressure goals (< 140/90 mmHg for individuals 15–79 years old and of 150/90 mmHg for individuals 80 years and older), and thus contributing to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with this condition. This is a descriptive study that follows average treatment and control rates from the Public Health System between 2017–2021 obtained from health centers statistics reports during HEARTS implementation. Treatment and control rates remained at 57% and 39% respectively between 2017-2019. Between 2020 and 2021, in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, treatment and control rates decreased very significantly, reaching 46% and 26%, respectively, in December 2021, even though the number of centers reporting the implementation of HEARTS increased from 227 to 387 in this same period. Prior to the pandemic, during the last quarter of 2019, a decrease in cardiovascular health controls was already observed as a result of social protests. In light of the results, the technical pillars of the HEARTS Initiative have an important role in helping to recover the population control rates reached in 2019 and increasing the speed to achieve better hypertension control rates.Item Prevalencia de marcadores serologicos de hepatitis en diversos grupos de poblacion del Peru(s.d.)A review was undertaken of 5 521 serum samples that had been tested to detect or confirm the presence of different hepatitis A, B, and delta serologic markers. The sources of the samples included a national reference laboratory, several outbreaks of viral hepatitis in civilian and military populations, and a serologic survey. They were examined using the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The prevalence of antibody to hepatitis A virus was very high (x=92.2 percent) and it was uniform. Prevalence of hepatitis B markers was more variable and inconsistent; it was high in samples from the Jungle region of Peru, where the average prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was 4.9 percent. Antibodies to delta hepatitis were present in 28.6 percent of the carriers of HBsAg identified in the outbreaks. All the outbreaks had similarities, including a high, ciclic case-fatality rate associate with the delta virus. Hepatitis B is highly endemic in Peru, while hepatitis B has average endemicity. It will be necessary to do more research in order to better understand the epidemiology of viral hepatitis in this country
