Description
From the beginning of 2013 up to epidemiological week (EW) 21, there have been 868,653 cases of dengue, 8,406 cases of severe dengue and 346 deaths (case fatality rate of 0.04%) in the Region of the Americas. The circulation of the 4 serotypes in the Region increases the risk of severe forms of dengue. The breakdown of the number of cases, severe cases, deaths and circulating serotypes are available on our website. In the first semester of 2013, outbreaks of dengue were registered in Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic. In places like Peru, cases were registered where there had previously not been locally acquired dengue cases.
Durante el año 2013 y hasta la semana epidemiológica (SE) 21, en la Región de las Américas se registraron 868.653 casos de dengue, 8.406 casos de dengue grave y 346 defunciones (letalidad del 0.04%). Con la circulación de los 4 serotipos en la Región, aumenta el riesgo de aparición de formas graves del dengue. El detalle del número de casos, casos graves, defunciones y serotipos circulantes se encuentran disponible en nuestra página web. En el primer semestre de 2013, se registraron brotes de dengue en Brasil, Costa Rica, Colombia, Paraguay y la República Dominicana. En algunos sitios como en Perú, los casos se registraron en zonas donde no se había registrado casos autóctonos de dengue anteriormente.

    During 2012, up to Epidemiological Week (EW) 42, there have been a total of 982,142 dengue cases at the regional level (incidence rate of 180 per hundred thousand inhabitants), 23,925 deaths and 521 severe cases. All four serotypes (DEN1, DEN2, DEN3 and DEN4) are circulating in all of the Americas. The highest incidence rate has been recorded in the Southern Cone (242.54 per hundred thousand inhabitants) where 58.1% of total dengue deaths in the continent have been concentrated.     Dengue and severe dengue continue to be a public health concern in the Region of the Americas. Despite Member States’ efforts to contain and mitigate the dengue epidemics, in the past two years, some of the countries in the Region have surpassed their historic record of cases and deaths. In fact, 2010 was the year with the highest number of cases in the history of the continent, with 1.69 million cases and 1,185 deaths. In 2011, a total of 1.04 million dengue cases and 719 dengue caused deaths were reported. In 2012, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Suriname reported dengue outbreaks. In Bolivia and Suriname the increase in cases was registered since the end of 2011. In addition, to the aforementioned, other countries in the Region have registered dengue cases in endemic areas, although not at epidemic levels.

    Dengue and severe dengue pose a public health problem in the tropical and subtropical areas of the Region of the Americas. During 2011, Member States reported 979,774 cases of dengue, of which 15,860 presented serious forms requiring hospitalization and 692 deaths. Historical data on the number of cases and deaths registered was surpassed this year with dengue outbreaks in Paraguay, Panama and in the countries and in the non-Hispanic Caribbean, such as Aruba, the Bahamas, and Saint Lucia. The introduction of Dengue 4 was also observed in Panama and in some states of Brazil where it had not previously circulated.

    From 1995 to 2007, 29,584 cases of dengue were reported, including 193 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever and 9 deaths from dengue; During this period, dengue serotypes DEN-1, 2, and 3 were in circulation, in different combinations. Up to Epidemiological Week / EW 52 of 2008, a total of 3,004 dengue cases were reported, including 44 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever and one death, with the serotype DEN-1 predominating. From the first week of 2009, an increase in the number of cases of classic dengue was reported, a disease trend that had been increasing since EW 48 in 2008. During the second week of January 2009, cases were registered in four departments of the country (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Cochabamba, Beni y Pando).     From 1 January to 26 March, 2008, the Brazilian health authorities have reported 406 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), with 34 deaths nationally. This constitutes a significant increase in the number of cases in several states compared to the same period in 2007: Amazonas (9.8 times), Rondônia (5.3 times), Sergipe (4.7 times), Bahia (3.4 times), Rio Grande do Norte (2.8 times), Pará (2.5 times), and Rio de Janeiro (2.2 times). DEN 2 and DEN 3 are the circulating serotyp
