    From 1995 to 2007, 29,584 cases of dengue were reported, including 193 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever and 9 deaths from dengue; During this period, dengue serotypes DEN-1, 2, and 3 were in circulation, in different combinations. Up to Epidemiological Week / EW 52 of 2008, a total of 3,004 dengue cases were reported, including 44 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever and one death, with the serotype DEN-1 predominating. From the first week of 2009, an increase in the number of cases of classic dengue was reported, a disease trend that had been increasing since EW 48 in 2008. During the second week of January 2009, cases were registered in four departments of the country (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Cochabamba, Beni y Pando).     Epidemiological Alert, Update: Dengue Situation in the Americas (5 March 2009)

    In the period from 2001 to 2007, more than 30 countries of the Americas have reported a total of 4,332,731 dengue cases (PAHO, 2008). During the same period, the number of cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) was 106,037, with 1,299 deaths and a case-fatality rate of 1.2%. All four dengue serotypes circulated in the Region (DEN-1, 2, 3 and 4).

    From the first of January up to Epidemiological Week (EW) 13, 2009 (2 April 2009), a total of 215,824 cases of dengue have been reported, including 3,022 cases of severe dengue (dengue hemorrhagic fever, dengue shock syndrome, and complicated dengue) and 69 deaths, with a Regional fatality rate of 2.28%. To date, 36% (n = 25) of the total number of deaths have been concentrated in Bolivia, followed by Brazil, where 33% of the deaths occurred (n = 23). Table 1 shows the data reported by subregion.

    From the first of January up to Epidemiological Week (EW) 15, 2009 (16 April 2009), a total of 234,106 cases of dengue have been reported, including 3,778 cases of severe dengue (dengue hemorrhagic fever, dengue shock syndrome, and complicated dengue) and 74 deaths, with a Regional fatality rate of 1.90%. To date, 36% (n = 25) of the total number of deaths have been concentrated in Bolivia, followed by Brazil, where 34% of the deaths occurred (n = 25). Table 1 shows the data reported by subregion.
