Description
This publication provides a description of the Caribbean Node of the Virtual Campus for Public Health (CN-VCPH), how it was developed, and its current management. It traces the progress of the Node from its inception in 2017 to 30 November 2023, and describes the importance of having a Caribbean Node. The publication provides information on the usage of the Virtual Campus for Public Health in the Caribbean, the courses offered on the VCPH, and the processes for course development. Finally, it includes a discussion of current challenges and recommendations for the future.

Item El Campus Virtual de Salud Pública de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud como estrategia de cooperación técnica(2022)[RESUMEN]. El Campus Virtual de Salud Pública es la plataforma educativa de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud, concebida como herramienta para la cooperación técnica. Los objetivos de este artículo son caracterizar la oferta de formación del Campus Virtual de Salud Pública identificando las propuestas de cursos virtuales; caracterizar a los participantes de los cursos; describir los procesos de actualización tecnológica y sus avances en términos de accesibilidad; e identificar su relación con las principales líneas de cooperación de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud. El Campus Virtual de Salud Pública ha desarrollado 210 cursos con tutoría y 226 de autoaprendizaje desde 2007, relacionados con las políticas de la Organización. Se verificó un uso heterogéneo del campus en las distintas temáticas de la cooperación. La cantidad de cursos autoadministrados realizados durante la pande- mia superó la cifra total acumulada en años previos. Los participantes provienen principalmente de Latinoamérica. Un 67,5% son mujeres, con edades entre 26 y 45 años. Un 57,1% posee educación universitaria, principalmente en enfermería o medicina. La mitad trabaja en hospitales y un 35,8% en el primer nivel. Más de un 90% de los participantes evaluaron favorablemente los temas abordados, recursos de conoci- miento y características del aula virtual. Como dificultades, señalan escasa disponibilidad de tiempo y bajo acceso a internet. Como ventajas, destacan autonomía de horarios y acceso a diversas fuentes de infor- mación. Las herramientas de evaluación disponibles no son suficientes para reconocer el impacto de los programas educativos. Se plantean los desafíos de profundizar en la accesibilidad y calidad de las propuestas educativas, fortalecer la relación con los temas de cooperación y mejorar la evaluación de los cursos y el conocimiento sobre los usuarios.Item Virtual Campus for Public Health (VCPH): Bringing knowledge to practice(PAHO, 2022)The Virtual Campus for Public Health (VCPH) is the educational platform of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Its objective is to lead strategic collaborative efforts among Member States and other partners to promote the training of human resources for health, for all people everywhere. The VCPH is structured in three nodes (regional, subregional, national) and it responds to the Strategy on Human Resources for Universal Access to Health and Universal Health Coverage. It works in coordination with the technical departments at PAHO, with the PAHO/WHO country offices in the Region, as well as with institutions that work on public health education and training. All VCPH courses are open access for participants and reflect PAHO's technical cooperation areas. The VCPH offers courses in PAHO’s four official languages: English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.Item Desarrollo del nodo Venezuela en el campus virtual de salud pública(2018)[RESUMEN]. El objetivo de este documento es describir los pasos en el desarrollo del nodo país del Campus Virtual de Salud Pública (CVSP) en Venezuela, para fortalecer la educación continua en entornos virtuales de aprendizaje, reforzar habilidades y conocimientos del personal de salud. Se definió como prioridad nacional la eliminación de barreras geográficas, ofrecer horarios flexibles y posibilidades de interacción en tiempo real con expertos a bajo costo fueron puntos resaltantes para el desarrollo del nodo en Venezuela. Los nodos del CVSP, tanto regionales como de países, que ofrece la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) permiten la formación masiva del personal de salud. Sin embargo, a pesar de algunas similitudes a nivel global y regional en temas de salud pública, los países tienen necesidades específicas según la situación epidemiológica, política, social y económica, y requieren dar respuestas a necesidades identificadas en el nivel local. En Venezuela, el enfoque del fortalecimiento en las competencias y la formación continua del personal de salud se orienta hacia los 13 921 equipos básicos de salud desplegados en los 24 estados del país. Ante esta realidad, la oficina nacional de la OPS apoyó el desarrollo del CVSP nodo Venezuela.Item Educational Approach of the Virtual Campus for Public Health. General considerations and pedagogical criteria for preparing virtual education initiatives(PAHO, 2022)The Virtual Campus for Public Health (VCPH) is a strategic tool for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) technical cooperation. As such, it is a space for distributing, managing, and updating knowledge in public health and for strengthening the capacities and competencies of the Region’s health teams. The guiding principles of its activities are consistent with PAHO’s values. The purpose of this publication is to introduce the pedagogical approach that supports PAHO's VCPH to the PAHO staff with project management responsibilities in the VCPH, as well as to the governments, ministries, institutions, and organizations that are part of the national hubs. An educational approach is the conceptual and methodological framework that explains, guides, and specifies educational processes and outcomes. In our case, this general framework supports training interventions in the field of public health. This document presents the vision, mission and principles of VCPH, the concept of permanent education and lifelong learning in the field of health, the principles of virtual education and education based on competences. It also highlights the way the VCPH conceives teaching and learning in the virtual environment and describes the lines of educational innovation that the VCPH is currently studying within the framework of technical cooperation. The publication is not intended as an exhaustive review of the conceptual discussions surrounding virtual education or the use of technology in education. Instead, it seeks to establish the frameworks that guide the VCPH educational approaches which are dynamic and require periodic updating.Item Virtual Campus for Public Health (VCPH): Bringing knowledge to practice. It functions as a decentralized network of people, institutions and organizations that share open educational courses and resources on public health topics relevant to the countries of the Region, through the use of information and communication technologies.
